Primary topic

[edit]

The standard for "primary topic" is lower in the case of WP:2DAB.

In this case, a Google search for "El Obeid" + sudan yields over 600,000 results, while a similar search for [1] yields less than 100,000. The results are equally lopsided on Google Books: 1,970 for Mesopotamia and 72,000 for Sudan. Srnec (talk) 13:40, 2 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

How the standard “is lower” indeed? I know, there is a faction of dab-pages-haters in Wikipedia who routinely apply the 2DAB bludgeon to destroy some of them. But how their (your) “lower standard” is supported by WP:consensus? Also, this way to check weights of dab entries is rather original. Why do you think that any mention of “Obeid” ancient culture necessarily includes the word “Mesopotamia”? Why not to make a good search (note that “Obeid” (عبيد) is also an Arabic family name and there will be a difficulty to separate “El Obeid” from just “Obeid”) and count results? In this instance I became convinced that many modern sources still refer to the town as to “El Obeid” despite the ambiguity, and this is a dominant meaning. But WP:BRD is also a useful thing. Do not push with your changes without a discussion next time, please. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 14:39, 2 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Are you admitting that the primary meaning of "El Obeid" is the Sudanese town? Srnec (talk) 15:08, 2 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. I only detest the editing style you demonstrated today: redirecting a long-existing page without a word of explanation, saying “read blah-blah-blah” as if I were unfamiliar with all this guideline crap, and reverts including this one (hint: a page with (disambiguation) in the title can be useful only as a disambiguation page or a redirect to one). You changed a long-existing configuration – it is you who should explicate what is the primary topic of what and why do you think so. Incnis Mrsi (talk)
